After reading The Hobbit last year – and because we are reading The Lord of the Rings this year – we decided to go as Tolkien characters for Halloween. We were a little unsure about what trick or treating during Covid would look like, so when we discovered that our dear friends were also going as Tolkien characters, we decided to get together with them for the evening. Another dear family also joined us (along with some of their neighbors), so mostly we sat around and ate chili while the kids played in the backyard. We did go trick or treating for about 30 minutes, but don’t tell the City of Austin.

James was in a terrible mood after his nap, and when I told him it was time to get dressed, he screamed that he did “NOT want to be Bilbo Baggins!” I informed him that the only way he could get candy was to dress up as Bilbo Baggins, and he rebutted, “that makes no sense.”
He had a point.
Thankfully, however, he put on his costume and was quite cooperative the rest of the evening.
